2009 Catfishing Summary - I did get more trips on the river with my boat this season. I got my lines in the water a total of 29 times. I did boat all 3 types of catfish, some carp, 2 sheephead perch, and 1 stripper. My total catch came to 41 fish, not a great average per trip. I was even skunked 3-4 times over the year.
My biggest cat was a 19 pound blue cat. That same day was also the best total weight for a trip. I caught 3 blues with a total weight of 40.5 pounds. Those cats were all caught using a big chunk of cut skipjack.
My best day of catching fish was in August when I had 8 cats and 2 carp into the boat. The flatheads I caught this year were all on the small side, the biggest only being 5 pounds.
The big surprise was the number of fish caught using back up baits. The skipjacks and shad were hard to get for some reason this year. I had to depend on other things for bait. My fishing buddy used Red Hot Smokies for most of the 13 fish he caught. We also had good results with strips of chicken breast, chicken nuggets, chicken liver, and french fries.
September and October were the most productive time for me this year. The Ohio River was down, clear and had some current. I am hopeful the river will be in the same condition next year. I will be on the lookout to find more skipjacks and shad all next season.
I did spend more time on the water this year and did get some rewards for the efforts. I am looking forward to doing a little better in the number size of fish caught next year. I do intend to enter a few catfish tournaments on the Ohio being held around Cincinnati in 2010.
